Mousekeeping in Germany
I had a look around this community and got the idea, that mousekeeping is realy different to the Swedish manner. So I´d like to tell you a bit…
There are mainly three kind of mousekeeper: Breeder, uninformed and freaks.
There is only one breeder´s club called DMRM - Deutscher Mäuse-Rassezucht-Verein. Maybe some of you know it from a pet fair. As far as I know they also get mice from nordish countrys like Sweden and Finland.
They breed mice in a way not everybody in Germany likes. Freaks are very critically about the cages. But I can tell much about it, because breeder are not my direction.
The ones I call the uninformed are people who keep mice as pet but don´t know much about them and also don´t want to know. I´m afraid that´s the biggest part og German mousekeeper.
A growing part are the freaks who I belong to. They keep their mice in modified furniture, in aviarys, very large, selfmade cages and similar things. They are also very interested in new ways of keeping they pets best and know much about keeping, behavior an healt of mice.
Usually freaks don´t keep breeded mice but ones from an animal shelter as I do, too.
Maybe I should show you some of my cages, so you get an impression of a German "mouse house":
This is my largest cage being 320cm long, 60cm wide and 180cm high. At the moment there lives a group from 23 Spiny Mice with 9 white Fancy Mice an two striped mice.

This is a selfmade terrarium with about 150x50x50cm. As you see, one is the home of a group of Fancy Mice. In the terrarium below there live two jirds.

Oh, you got some big nice cages there! And you got so many interesting mice - what´s Acacia Rats?
I´m sorry to tell I´m not a freak, I´m a breeder, but I love to inform about fancy mice and to make people love them as pets.
Have look at my page in the subjekt "Arten". There you find "Akazienratten" - Acacia Rats in English. The ones on the pictures are mine.
I know that you´re a breeder, but it doesn´t matter to me. ;)
I´m not against breeder in general, but against the way, the mice are often keept by German breeders. Here I found photos which show, that you give your mice much natural things, wooden houses and so on. But in Germany some breeders keep their mice in labortory cages without anything else than one plastic house.
I think you should keep the mice in bigger cages, because it can influence the shown behavior very much, so you can watch much more different ways of behavior. Might be interesting for you. ;)
