-Tyckte det kunde vara kul att höra vad ni andra tycker om det hon skrivit, om ni orkar läsa!

Differences between Fancy/Show Mice and Petstore Mice

I have 28 years' experience with primarily petstore mice, and three now with show (fancy) mice.  Note I do not include in the category ‘show mice' a fancy-looking mouse found in a petshop, which may be a mix or x generations away from a properly bred show mouse.

In terms of looks, there does not need to be a difference except of course that fancy mice have all sorts of fun colors and types of fur.  A healthy mouse looks like a healthy mouse.  My fancies, however, are all ‘English'; breeders sometimes pride themselves on breeding only English.  These mice are even ‘mousier' than American mice (if I may say that without reprisal) only in that they have bigger ears and longer tails.  There are also rules about what shape or regularity a show mouse must have, and if a breeder ‘edits' (some of us don't want to even think about that), there will be more ‘perfect-looking' mice.  Remember, a true show mouse must for instance have every toenail the same colour…  My mice are bred from show stock but are unedited.

The main differences that I have experienced are in temperament and personality.  Of course these differences are only ON AVERAGE and I don't mean to insult anybody's special mouse.  Consider again the fact that the judge in a show has to be able to inspect every toe, whisker, shape, underbelly etc of each mouse-all unknown to him/her personally--without having to hold onto a tail or restrain the mouse in any way.  We wish they all were so tame!  Show mice certainly receive extra training for this, but it is also bred into them through many generations.  Thus fancy mice are generally more docile and calm than their petstore equivalents.

On the other hand, as is true in humans as well, selecting for looks is not the same as selecting for brains.  There may be mouse shows where mice have to perform clever acts-how cute would that be!--but I've never heard of them.  In my experience, my show mice have not been quite as clever/curious/interested as my petstore mice were.  For instance I have rarely met a petstore mouse that didn't, given the opportunity, figure out how to climb upside down on the top of a mesh cage lid, thereby using all space resources in the cage (the main exception to this was a pair of  year-old does who had lived their lives in a cage with no wheel and no climbing possibilities until I got them.  They never learned to be curious or climby).  My three generations of Fancies, on the other hand, when given ladders and all sorts of other ways to get up there, just don't get it.  Even after I put them there myself, even the ones that didn't panic didn't ever want to try it again.  And when I had two petstore stock mice (actually three generations bred by a fancy breeder but no editing) living with 5 fancies the difference in general curiousity and personality was very noticeable.

This is just what I have experienced.

i all välmening!

det var en fin bild faktiskt! vilken sida hittade du den på? länk…

vi har inte så många riktiga svensktypade möss i Sverige idag, de flesta är korsningar… inte 50% utan kanske 10% engelskt eller liknande…
